Creating Renewable Hydrogen from Biomass and Waste Materials
GTI Energy and partners assessed the behavior of biomass and municipal solid waste (MSW) conversion to syngas using GTI’s fluidized-bed gasifier (U-GAS) technology for creation of renewable hydrogen. Gasification of biomass demonstrates significant reductions in product carbon intensity, and the addition of MSW increases the economic benefits while minimizing pollution from plastics while producing acceptable levels of tar.
Idaho National Laboratory tested woody biomass, non-recyclable municipal solid waste, and waste plastics to identify an optimized feedstock pellet composition and confirm that the high plastics content of the pellets would not create problems during gasifier operations. Improved feed screw hardware was developed to ensure smooth operation, and the economics of biomass/MSW U-GAS facilities based on two U.S. facilities appears promising.
