Demonstrating Benefits and Reliability of Hydrogen Mobility for Heavy-duty Transportation
The California Energy Commission (CEC) has selected GTI—along with the project team of Symbio, Michelin, and other industry partners—to develop and demonstrate a hydrogen-fueled Class 8 truck that matches the performance of a 15-liter diesel truck, providing a zero-emission solution for demanding regional-haul trucking operations.
The truck is slated to travel between the Inland Empire and Northern San Joaquin Valley for 12 months, using existing and future hydrogen infrastructure along the 400-mile route. The proposed vehicle will operate throughout nine counties with a significant portion of the route crossing through disadvantaged communities, and the team will engage with the communities and local stakeholders to educate them on environmental and economic benefits of the zero-emission technologies.
GTI Energy will provide program management, grant administration, and data collection for the “Symbio H2 Central Valley Express” project. Other project partners include Total Transportation Services (TTSI), Frontier Energy, Ricardo Strategic Consulting, Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas) and Utilization Technology Development (UTD).
The project supports California’s goal to achieve economy wide carbon neutrality by 2045.
Jonah Steinbuck, Deputy Director of the California Energy Commission’s Research and Development Division said, “The CEC is proud to support this unique clean transportation demonstration project. California’s transportation sector accounts for about 50% of the state’s greenhouse gas emissions, nearly 80% of nitrogen oxide pollution, and 90% of diesel particulate matter pollution. Transitioning to low-carbon fuels and zero emission technologies is key to California meeting its nation-leading energy and climate goals.”
