GTI Energy has been awarded nearly $250 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to lead four projects under the Methane Emissions Reduction Program (MERP). These initiatives aim to advance technologies, improve methane monitoring and mitigation strategies, and foster workforce development and community engagement across the U.S. oil and gas sector.
These projects exemplify GTI Energy’s commitment to addressing critical energy challenges by reducing methane emissions and deploying innovative, scalable solutions. Through collaboration with industry, government, and local stakeholders, GTI Energy is driving progress toward achieving low-emission, low-cost energy systems that leverage gases, liquids, infrastructure, and efficiency to meet urgent energy challenges and improve global energy access.
Details of the Funded Projects
- Well Emissions and Leakage Limitation Check (WELL Check): This comprehensive initiative will deploy advanced methane emissions reduction technologies for high-priority emission sources, implement industry best practices for leak detection and repair, and deliver education and training programs tailored for small oil and gas operators.
- Methane Mitigation Demonstration Using Linear Motor Compressor: This project will pilot an innovative, low-cost linear motor methane mitigation compressor to capture leaks across the natural gas value chain. The project includes robust community outreach efforts and workforce development initiatives to ensure broad adoption and minimal environmental impact.
- Methane Emissions Training, Reporting, and Information for Communities: Focused on the Appalachian region, this project will deploy multi-modal methane monitoring technologies, share results of emissions measurement, create hands-on training opportunities to prepare workers for roles in methane mitigation, and foster engagement between operators and local communities.
- Southeastern Methane Emissions Quantification: This initiative will develop region-specific methane emissions measurement strategies and disseminate data to improve energy efficiency and reduce environmental impacts. The program emphasizes community benefits and workforce readiness, particularly in disadvantaged areas.
Along with leading these projects, GTI Energy will also support initiatives by Advanced Cooling Technologies, Inc., and the University of Oklahoma. These efforts focus on developing and demonstrating a low-cost combustion emissions control system for methane mitigation and creating accessible, actionable methane emissions data for Oklahoma’s rural and urban communities, respectively.
Driving Innovation and Community Impact
These projects mark a major milestone in addressing methane emissions at scale, addressing one of the most significant contributors to climate change. By deploying innovative technologies, enhancing emissions monitoring, and engaging with communities, GTI Energy is driving measurable progress toward methane emissions mitigation. These efforts create opportunities for collaboration across industries, governments, and local stakeholders, ensuring environmental and economic benefits are realized.
“These projects illustrate the powerful role of collaboration in technology demonstration, operational best practice sharing, and workforce training focused to deploy solutions that can significantly reduce methane emissions this decade,” said Paula A. Gant, Ph.D., President and CEO, GTI Energy. “Leveraging our technical and operational expertise and working alongside industry, government, and local communities, we are building solutions to consequential challenges in lowering air emissions from energy systems while also meeting the needs of local communities.”
