Smart Shutoff Safety System for Commercial and Residential Buildings

GTI Energy led a project to research, test, develop, and implement a comprehensive gas smart shutoff safety system (CGSSSS) for residential and commercial gas customers that helps to reduce risks from leaks and other natural disasters. The system uses smart sensors to detect abnormal concentrations of gas or temperatures prior to them becoming hazardous, sends alerts to first responders, and automatically closes a smart valve to stop further gas emissions.

Working with partners Netmore, Honeywell, Semtech, Lorax, New Cosmos, and others, two systems were successfully demonstrated to prove the concept, exhibiting desired behaviors and confirming their intended functionality. Funding for the project was provided by the California Energy Commission (CEC) and Operations Technology Development (OTD).
